It's cold tonight. I feel colder than ever before.
Sadrin curled up at the foot of a towering oak tree. He hadn't been able to find the Faeries today. He had looked for hours, peering under rocks and up in the branches of the trees. In the small brook that ran through the valley and in the long grass. The fog hadn't lifted all day, and didn't show signs of leaving now.
His stomach growled, and he took another bite of the root he had dug up. His dad had showed him some of the edible things one could find in the wilderness, when his dad was still alive. Now it was Kelsper who took care of him and his mother. He didn't like Kelsper. Kelsper was an angry man, and had hurt him too many times.
So he had left for the Faerie Valley. No grown-ups came here. They were scared of the Faeries. But Sadrin knew, he knew all about them. The Faeries were nice. To children, at least.
Sadrin felt his eyes getting heavy. As he drifted off to sleep he thought he saw dancing lights in the distance. The Faeries... He thought. I'll... say hi once I wake up...
His clothes were damp when he woke up. The dew had settled and it left him feeling chilled to the bone. He rubbed his arms to try to warm up. The sun could be faintly seen rising through the fog. It couldn't make it through to warm him, though. Its warmth shined on a tree far above him, the branches glowing in the morning light.
It made sense to him to climb the tree to get at that precious warmth. It took a few tries to get up at the lowest branch, which was still nearly out of reach. Once he got up he found the perfect spot where the sun made it through the branches. One large branch to sit on, with another to the side to lean on. He let his eyes close as the sun warmed his chilled clothes.
He woke up a few hours later in the shade. The sun could be seen through the upper branches, but it no longer shone directly on him. He was rather stiff from his nap in the tree, but he climbed down without much trouble.
Then he began looking for the Faeries again. The valley was big, and it would take him a long time before he had searched all of it. He found a few berries for a small lunch. There was a beehive that tempted him with its honey, but he had no interest in getting stung.
As the sun began to drop he decided to find some leaves to make a makeshift bed to lie in. He spent the last few minutes gathering as many as he could. As he felt his eyelids begin to droop he quickly burrowed into his makeshift bed. The leaves didn't do much to keep him warm, but they were better than nothing.
It's cold tonight. I feel colder than ever before.
Sadrin woke early to a growling stomach. He quickly ate another root, but it didn't do very much to help him. He scrambled up the tree again to get some of the precious warmth.
The third day passed just like the other two had. No sign of the Faeries. He didn't get discouraged, though. They were here somewhere, he just had to find out where. They would welcome him. And even if he couldn't find them, it was better here than with Kelsper. He didn't want to think about what would happen to him if he went back after being gone for two days. His cheek still stung from Kelsper's last outburst.
It started to get dark. Sadrin gathered more leaves for his bed, ignoring the hunger he felt. He hadn't been able to find another one of the plants with the edible roots, and he had eaten all the berries that he could find. Well, all the ones that he could eat. There were a few bushes that had bitter tasting berries, and he was sure that they were poisonous.
He felt his eyelids drooping again and quickly dove into his leaf pile. He curled up, shivering. Lights again, this time they were closer. He could see them even when his eyes closed. He felt them around him as he started to dream, a dream filled with laughing sprites and dancing lights.
It's cold tonight. I feel... So warm.
Another story I forgot to upload.
